William Stewart Humphreys, 89, died at Suncoast Hospice's Brookside facility in Clearwater on January 11, 2011. He was a loving dad, granddad, and great-granddad and will be greatly missed by his family. Bill was born August 16, 1921 in Portsmouth, Ohio to Gertrude and Otto Humphreys. He was baptized in the Baptist Church. Bill was a Life Scout and a lifeguard in his youth. He left Portsmouth High School and joined the Civilian Conservation Corps during the depression years to help support his mother. Bill married Vivian Eloise Martin in Portsmouth in 1942. In June of that year he joined the Army Air Corps at Patterson Field in Ohio. He was assigned to the 411th Fighter Squadron. Bill went ashore at Omaha Beach, Normandy, France on the second day of the Allied D-Day invasion of Europe. Bill served in Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe, and Ardennes. He received the EAME Theater Ribbon with 5 Bronze Stars and the Soldier's Medal for an act of heroism in France on June 16, 1944 while a member of the 9th Airdrome Squadron. Bill spent his working career in sales, working from both Washington, D.C. and New York City. He traveled the country extensively as part of his sales work. He and Vivian retired to Wilmington, North Carolina and then later relocated to Fort Pierce, Florida in 2000. Vivian, Bill's wife of 63 years at the time of her death, died in 2005. Bill was preceded in death by his one brother, Cyrus, and one sister, Katherine. Bill moved to Clearwater, Florida in 2008. He is survived by his four children, Bill Jr., Debbie, Tad, and Chris, nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and his best friend since youth, Howard Ramey of Portsmouth, Ohio. A private memorial service will be held at St. Alfred Episcopal Church, 1601 Curlew Road Palm Harbor, Florida 34683.
