William “Billy” Howell, 86, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, love, and service that touched countless lives. He was preceded in death by his mother, Anna Belle; his father, Leo Howell Sr.; and his brothers, Leo Jr. and Herman.

Billy was a devoted husband of 63 years to his beloved wife, Paunez “Pert” Howell, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and partnership. He was a proud and loving father to his daughters, Kimberly Howell Smith and Heidi Howell Carpentier, and found immense joy in being a grandfather to Christopher, Lauren, Meghan, and Abigail, all of whom were the pride of his life.

For 45 years, Billy devoted himself to education and mentorship as a beloved teacher and both a football and baseball coach. His impact extended far beyond the classroom and the field, where he inspired generations of students and athletes with his wisdom, discipline, and unwavering belief in their potential.

Billy was also a proud alumnus of the University of Tampa, where he excelled as a three-sport athlete in football, basketball, and baseball—an early reflection of the passion for sports and leadership that would define much of his life. He had a lifelong love of tennis, which he enjoyed playing for many years, and he raised his two daughters on the courts of the Brandon Swim & Tennis Club.

Following his distinguished teaching and coaching career, Billy embraced retirement by continuing to stay active and engaged, enjoying tennis, softball, and bike riding.

He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, former students, players, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of leadership, compassion, and devotion will live on in the many lives he shaped.
