Cooney, Terence James 82, of Riverview, died on May 27, 2021. Terry had a long career in New York State Office of Substance Abuse Services, helping many thousands of vulnerable people over the years with insight and kindness. He was a graduate of De La Salle Academy, Brooklyn College and received a Master's degree from the New School for Social Research, all in New York City. He served in the United States Army from 1963 to 1965. Terry's long life was enriched by the fulfillment of his dream to live in Florida since 1996 where he enjoyed life with his wife Sheila Donohue and their son Danh Cooney. He enjoyed reading and hockey. But his passion was his family and encouraging all to be and do their best. His true vocation was as a loving husband and father and in this he never wavered.
Terry was preceded in death by his brother Patrick and his first wife Dorothy Butler. He also suffered the loss of an infant daughter, Mary, an infant son, John Robert, and two adult sons, Terence D. and Colum and son-in-law Jo Samson. Terry is survived by his wife Sheila, daughter Frances Samson, son Danh and granddaughter Valarie. He is also mourned by his sisters Mary Smyth and Brigid (Bernie Golden) and brother Charles as well as by many nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Stephen Catholic Church on Tuesday, June 8, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. If so desired, a contribution in his name to a charity of your choice will be appreciated, although not expected.
