Shirley Temple Deeter died September 26, 2020, at her home in Riverview, Florida.
Born March 14, 1935, in Ray County, Missouri, she was the daughter of Lucy Keyes and Harry Henry Loeven. Shirley attended high school in Hardin, Missouri, where she developed a life-long interest in math. Following graduation from what is now the University of Central Missouri, she entered the graduate program in Mathematics at the University of Kansas at a time when it was still relatively uncommon for women to pursue that field of study; she went on to earn her Master's degree there and met her husband, Charles R. Deeter. They moved to Fort Worth, Texas, in the early 1960s and started a family. Shirley taught math at several institutions, including Texas Christian University and Tarleton State University. Following Charlie's death, she moved to Tampa, Florida, where she enjoyed spending time with her grandson and continued her birdwatching, travel, and photography hobbies. She also kept teaching with the OLLI program at the University of South Florida.
She is survived by her brother, Robert H. Loeven (Chula Vista, California); daughter Constance M. Deeter (Pasadena, California); daughter Lucy D. Jones and son-in-law Paul L. Jones (Riverview, Florida); grandson C. Michael Jones (Gainesville, Florida); nephew Guy Janousek (Lawrence, Kansas); nieces Cecile Befort (Shawnee, Kansas) and Jenifer Janousek (Lawrence, Kansas); three grand-nephews and a grand-niece, along with many cousins and friends.
Services will be scheduled when family can travel to be together.
