Obituary

Sarah Cassell Kirby, known affectionately as "Sallie", passed away peacefully on February 27, 2025, at the age of 90 in Riverview, Florida. Originally from Scotch Plains, New Jersey, and later a longtime resident of Manassas, Virginia, Sallie touched the lives of many with her warmth, generosity, kindness, and dedication to education.

Born on December 18, 1934, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Frank and Mary Cassell, Sarah's early life was marked by a love of learning and a passion for the arts. She graduated from Scotch Plains High School in 1952, where she was an active participant in numerous school clubs and activities, especially those focused on dramatics and education.

Sallie earned her Bachelor of Science in Education from New Jersey State Teachers College (now Rowan University) in 1956, and later earned a Master's in Education from Boston University in 1976.

Her teaching career took her to Hawaii and then to Nuremberg, Germany, where she met the love of her life, John R. Kirby. The two were married on July 18, 1964, in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. Their life together was filled with love, travel, adventure, and a shared commitment to service.
Sallie spent many years teaching for Prince William County Schools in Virginia until her retirement. Throughout her career, she inspired countless students with her passion for learning and her dedication to their growth and success.

Sarah was preceded in death by her beloved husband, retired Col. John R. Kirby, and her sister, Margaret Diane Crowe. She is survived by her two sons, Erik C. Kirby and Craig C. Kirby; her grandchildren, Elizabeth K. Kirby and William P. Kirby; and many cherished extended family members and church friends.

In addition to her devotion to family and teaching, Sallie had a deep love for God and also desired to deepen that love in her children. She was an avid reader with a particular fondness for mysteries and was a closet Anglophile. Gardening brought her immense joy, and she took great pleasure in nurturing her flowers. She also had a soft spot for desserts, especially ice cream and ginger ale, which were some of her simple delights.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on March 10, 2025, at Sarasota National Cemetery.

The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff at Accent Care Hospice, including Heidy, Martha, Bethania, Blair, Lydia, and Roberta, for their exceptional care during Sallie's final days.

Arrangements are entrusted to Serenity Meadows Funeral Home, Riverview FL.
