Rudolph "Marty"
Smith
February 6, 1957 — July 15, 2021
Rudolph "Marty" Smith, III, was born on February 6, 1957 to the late Rudolph M J Smith, Jr. and Dorothy Stallings Smith. He was born and raised in Annapolis, Maryland. Marty graduated Annapolis High School in 1975 and received a full ride scholarship from the University of Maryland for lacrosse, however, he already knew where he wanted to go with his career and that was with Mercedes Benz.
Marty met his wife, Joyce in 1976 when they worked at Benson Motor Cars. They were married in August 1977 and would have been married 44 years this August 6th. Their first son, Stephen was born in 1981 and then Kevin in 1984. He was so proud of his sons and loved them very much. Marty enjoyed watching them play their individual sports and was beyond proud of all their accomplishments. One of Marty's favorite pastimes was teaching them all he knew about cars, especially Mercedes Benz. One of the best, probably most exciting, events in his life besides the birth of his sons, was in 2011 when he became a grandfather - "Pop" as he was later called by his granddaughter Summer, whom he adored and loved with every beat of his heart.
Over his lifetime, Marty enjoyed sailing and boating. He even taught sailing at the Annapolis Yacht Club as a teenager and young adult, winning multiple trophies. Along with sailing, Marty loved to play golf. Whether it was alone or with his sons and friends you could find Marty on the greens.
Marty worked for several Mercedes Benz Dealerships from September 1974 through July 2021, with most of those years working at Mercedes Benz of Annapolis (formerly Benson Motor Cars). Also working for Valley Motors in Towson, MD and most recently (for the past 5 years) Mercedes Benz of Tampa. He was a Master Technician for many years, advancing to Shop Foreman for the past 23 years. His nickname at Mercedes Benz of Annapolis was "Smarty" because of all the knowledge that he had for the vehicle. Marty has been recognized by Mercedes Benz as one of only six people in the entire nation to have more than 45 years in the industry. This year would have marked 47 years and was to be officially recognized at this years' Shop Foreman Convention.
Marty leaves to mourn his absence his beloved wife, Joyce "Joy", sons Stephen (Susie) and Kevin, his sister Michelle Winterson (Harlow) and his precious granddaughter, Summer. He was a great mentor and friend. Those who knew him, loved him and he will be missed by all.
