Robert James
Mahoney
July 4, 1934 – December 9, 2022
Robert James Mahoney,88,of Brandon, FL, passed away at TGH on December 9,2022. Bob, or Capt. Bob, was born on July 4,1934. (He was told by a health worker that he was the only child born in Hills. Co. on that day)
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas A. and Ann Mahoney. His two sisters Emeline Middaugh and Jean A. Moody also preceded him. Tom Mahoney his brother, died in June of this year. In 1987 Bob's oldest son, Mark , died as the result of a car accident. Bob is survived by his wife Gayle to whom he has been married for 62 years. They were blessed with 3 other children, Barbara Woodke (Bob) of Brandon and Mary Pat Stewart (Scott) of Lexington Park, Md., and son Michael (Paula) of Seffner. His family grew to include 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He felt like this loving family was his greatest accomplishment.
He and his wife have been members of New Hope United Methodist for over 60 years. He was active at North Brandon Little League while his sons played there. Through his business, T.A.Mahoney of Tampa, he was supportive of many activities that involved fishing and fishing tournaments. Bob was never happier than when he was teaching his children and grandchildren how to fish. During his high school years at Plant High School he excelled at football and baseball. After finishing H.S. he went to sea, working on tug boats between Tampa and Galveston. In 1958 he returned to Tampa to work in their store his father founded, T.A. Mahoney Co. At that time his father was in bad health. Bob along with his brother quit their jobs to come home and keep his father's store going. Over the next 60 years he continued working , never planning to retire. His health began to fail and he could only go in occasionally.
Capt. Bob's memorial service will be on Monday, Dec. 19, 2 pm at New Hope United Methodist Church in Brandon.
