Park Allen Bitting (92) of Valrico Florida passed away on 11/25/2014. He was born in Millerstown Pennsylvania on 9/10/22 to Myles and Sarah Bitting. During his life he was a farmer, soldier, business owner, husband, father, grandfather and happy family man. He worked as a farmer during the depression on the family farm. He pushed a plow pulled by two mules on their 40 acre spread as a youth and he took care of their livestock. He worked in a quarry in his teens setting dynamite and learning about explosives. He served as a corporal in the second division in the marines during WWII and was a bomb disposal and explosives expert. He saw action in the pacific campaign and fought in the battles for Saipan, Tinian and Tarawa and was classified as an "atomic GI" for his exposure to radiation during the occupation of Nagasaki after the atomic bomb was dropped. He settled in Chicago and completed schooling for engineering at the University of Chicago. He worked at Chicago Forge and designed and held a patent for a machine fitting while employed there. He met Helvey Mantyla at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago and their love affair lasted 61 years. They raised three sons who all became eagle scouts and college graduates with dad and moms support and encouragement. Park went into business for himself after the birth of their sons and created a comfortable and happy life for his family. He enjoyed outdoor activities, vacations and sports events and he was always supportive with his sons activities and interests. He truly enjoyed visiting his sons families and playing with his grandchildren in his final years. He will be remembered as a perfect example of the greatest generation for all the hardships he overcame with his positive attitude and unrelenting work effort. His joyous sense of humor will be missed. God bless you Park, you were one of a kind!
