Obituary

Grahovak, Michael Joseph, 64, of Riverview, FL and Hibbing, MN, died on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at Brandon Regional Medical Center of Congestive Heart Failure. Mike was born August 23, 1946 in Grand Rapids, MN. He attended Eveleth High School and was a graduate of the Vocational-Technical School in Eveleth. Mike was a retired Service Manager at Iron Trail Motors and had worked at various automobile dealerships in the area. After retirement, Mike and his wife, Karen, purchased a home in Riverview, FL where they spent their winters. Mike was veteran, having served with the Army in the Vietnam War. He was a member of the VFW Post 1172 Eveleth, American Legion Post 0239 Virginia, Disabled American Veterans Kolstad Chapter #23 Virginia, Moose Lodge 2158 Riverview, FL and Pleasant Living Homeowners Association, Riverview, FL. Mike and Karen were area representatives for Youth for Understanding Foreign Exchange Student Program for many years. Through this program they hosted 5 foreign sons. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Steve J. Grahovak and Katherine (Schullo) Grahovak of Eveleth; and his foreign exchange son, Jim Ivan Hanssen of Norway. Mike is survived by his wife of 43 years, Karen; daughter, Mary (Jeff) Parker of Little Chute, WI; stepsons, Ted (Karen) Fossum of Zim and Steve (Julie) Fossum of Buhl; stepdaughter, Kay (Kelly Thiel) Fossum of Virginia; special daughter, Nina Hanssen (Scott) Wenisch of Prior Lake; foreign sons, Dr. Frank (Simona) Zimmermann (Germany) of Brooklyn, NY; Jyrki (Mari) Koenkyto of Loimaa, Finland, Dr. Yuji (Mako) Uesugi of Hiroshima, Japan, and Jari (Marika) Harjunpaa of Helsinki, Finland; several step grandchildren, step great-grandchildren, foreign grandchildren, nieces, nephews, his precious Yorkie-Poo, Karrington, and also many special friends too numerous to mention. Mike was known for his great sense of humor: when you were with him you knew a good laugh was in store. He enjoyed dirt track racing, Nascar, and spending time at the cabin with his family and friends. A Celebration of Mike's life will be on Sunday, March 13, 2011 at 3:00 pm at the Pleasant Living Recreation Club in Riverview, FL. A memorial service in MN will be held at a later date.
