Obituary

Mrs. Marianna Catherine Hughes Stoker, 90, was called home by the Lord Jesus Christ, on Sunday, May 3rd at LifePath Hospice House in Sun City Center, Fl. from complications of Alzheimers disease. She was born and raised in Bramwell, W. Va., the oldest daughter of Dea Peraldo Hughes and Bernard Howard Hughes. She went to Bramwell High School, where she met her high school sweetheart and beloved husband of almost 70 years, Bobby. They graduated together in 1953, and married in 1956, while she was attending Concord College, and he was at Virginia Tech. After graduation, they moved to Miami, and then to Cocoa, Fl. They later came back to Bluefield, Va. to raise their family. During that time, she taught children’s Sunday school at Parkview Baptist Church, was active in Leanna’s Girl Scouts troop, was a Garden Club member, became the PTA president, and taught 3rd grade at Dudley Elementary School in Bluefield until 1981. She was loved by her old students, who remembered her and would stop to say hi whenever they saw her.

She and Bobby moved to Brandon, Fl, where they joined First Baptist Church of Brandon, and remain active there still. She loved her entire family, every baby she ever saw, and animals and pets (especially our many Siamese cats over the years). Along with being a voracious reader, she loved to learn new crafts, garden around her home, and find new travel destinations. Her group of church girlfriends, nicknamed the “Six Pack”, took a variety of trips over the years. Together with Bobby, she took multiple cruises, traveled to Canada, Italy, the Caribbean, Central America, Alaska, Hawaii, and all but 2 states in the US.

She is preceded in death by her son, Dr. Michael Hughes Stoker of Wytheville Va. She is survived by her husband Bobby Clayton Stoker, sister Judy Hughes Sword of Bluefield, W.Va, daughter Leanna Kathryn Stoker of Brandon, Fl, grandchildren Jonathon Michael Stoker of Wytheville, Va, William Andre Stoker of Rural Retreat, Va, Maria Vasilica Stoker of Wytheville, Va, and great grandson Jaylen Cole Stoker of Wytheville, Va.

Marianna will be remembered for her beautiful smiling face, kindness, great sense of humor and frequent laughter. She will be dearly missed and will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Until we meet again…
