Joseph Scavelli
Born November 21, 1928
Died September 27, 2003
Dad was born in Malaga N.J. in his family's home. Dad's parents were Louis and Philameia Scavelli. Both parents were from Italy. Dad was a very good athlete in High School becoming a State Champion in Wrestling. Dad also played football at Vineland High School. After High School Dad wrestled in professional matches for fun. Dad was also a very gifted singer and went to New York to try to make it as a singer. Dad was supposed to sign a contract with a record producer but pulled out of the contract. I asked him years later why he would not sign, and he told me that at that time the Mafia was in control of the music industry and he did not want to be controlled like Frank Sinatra and other singers.
After Dad came back from N.Y. He opened Scavelli's Truck Stop in Malaga. This is where he met Mom. Dad also worked for DuPont in Pennsville. Dad worked and became friends with Bruce Willis's Father. They worked in the same maintenance team at DuPont. Mr. Willis told my Dad that Bruce was in N.Y. trying to make it as an actor. Dad told me this story years later when we were watching an episode of "Moonlighting" that he knew Bruce's father.
Dad retired from DuPont and went into the Nuclear Power Plant construction field as a Pipefitter. Dad was also a very good plumber and held N.J. State Master Plumber Lic. #5376. Dad was also good at Masonry and Carpentry; building our home in N.J. with his brothers. Dad also had other businesses such as JBS Fruit and Produce, Giuseppe's Tangy Peppers and Pickles, Scavelli's Trash Service, and Scavelli Plumbing Heating and Cooling which he opened up with his son Steven at the age of 60.
Dad was a very giving man and loved his wife Betty, son Steven, and daughter Vickie. Dad was very funny and loved to laugh, and when he laughed everybody laughed with him. Dad had a great personality and would help anybody. When problems came up he would just say "Everything is going to work out." Dad became sick with Parkinson disease and died with his arms wide open so his soul would be received by the Lord on September 27, 2003 at 11:08. We love you Dad, and will see you soon.
