Joseph "Joe" Anthony MONGIELLO, Jr., 84, of Wimauma, Florida passed away September 15, 2022, at Palm Gardens in Sun City Center. Born and raised in Philadelphia and Springfield, Pennsylvania he graduated in 1956 from Saint James Roman Catholic High School in Chester, Pennsylvania. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marie Helen Wooding and second wife, Frances Winkler; his parents Joseph and Lillian Mongiello; and his brother Alphonso Joseph Mongiello. Joe is survived by his daughter Joanne Grogan (husband Michael) of Wimauma, Florida; brother Robert Mongiello of Taos, New Mexico; grandsons Zachary Grogan (wife Jacqueline) of Plant City, Joshua Grogan of Tampa, and Jacob Grogan of Lakeland; and great-granddaughter Lila Faye Grogan. Joe was a devoted husband, father to his daughter Joanne, and grandfather always exhibiting a zest and spirit for life. Upon graduation from high school, Joe served in the United States Air Force from 1956 to 1962. During this time, Joe with the rank of Airman First Class, was awarded the U.S. Air Force Commendation Medal for heroism credited with the saving the life of a fellow crewman from falling out of a blown open escape hatch of a C-17 aircraft. He was also recalled to brief service during the Cuban Missile Crisis in the midst of the Cold War period. Following service he worked as an electrician for the Philadelphia Electric Company for 36 years in various capacities from lineman to nuclear power plant operator, retiring in 1998. He was avid life-long golfer, a well-loved youth sports coach, and a great fan of the Philadelphia sports franchises—especially the Eagles and Phillies.
