Joseph Michael
Goenner
July 23, 1942 – April 16, 2026
Joseph Michael Goenner, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and treasured member of the Lithia, Florida community, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2026, in Ruskin. Born on July 23, 1942, in New York to his loving parents Alfred and Millie Goenner, Joseph lived a life marked by dedication, kindness, and unwavering commitment to his family and community.
Joseph's journey began in New York, where he married his beloved wife, Caroline, on February 20, 1961, at the age of 18. Their marriage, spanning 65 wonderful years, was a testament to enduring love and partnership. Together, they built a family and a life grounded in mutual respect and shared joy.
As a skilled sheetmetal worker, Joseph contributed his craftsmanship to Fisher Skylights of New York, specializing in the creation of skylights—a trade that showcased his precision and dedication. In January 1977, seeking new opportunities and a fresh start, Joseph moved his family to Naples, Florida. There, he ventured into entrepreneurship by purchasing Western Auto, which subsequently became Western Bike. Working closely alongside his father, Pop, until 2005, Joseph nurtured the business into a beloved local establishment. He continued to run it successfully until his retirement in 2008, leaving a legacy carried forward by his youngest son Al and daughter-in-law Heather.
His spirit of generosity was embodied in his active participation in the Bikes for Tykes program in Naples, where Joseph selflessly donated, repaired, and reconditioned bicycles for local children during the Christmas season. This commitment to community exemplified his kindness and giving nature, touching countless lives beyond his immediate family.
Joseph's passions extended beyond his work and community service. He was an avid enthusiast of boat and car shows, often found enjoying the camaraderie and fascination these gatherings inspired. His love for the outdoors was evident through his fondness for fishing, boating, scuba diving, and snorkeling, particularly in the scenic Florida Keys—activities he cherished as moments to connect with nature and family alike.
Though not one to follow sports avidly, Joseph was always present and supportive at the games of his children and grandchildren, embodying the role of a loving and encouraging father and grandfather. Known for his quick wit and warm humor, he frequently delighted those around him with funny stories and sharp commentary, enriching the lives of family and friends with laughter and joy.
Joseph is survived by his devoted wife Caroline Goenner; his children, Bonnie and her husband Bennett Akim, Joey Goenner and his significant other Laura Monaco Fisher, Millie and her husband Dan Shikes, and Al and his wife Heather Goenner; as well as his beloved grandchildren Caroline Akim, Bennett (Bubba) Akim, Tyler Goenner, Joshua Polly, Sophia Shikes, Alyssa Goenner, Andrew Shikes, and Alexandria Goenner. He also leaves behind a great-grandchild, Junior Wade, who carries forward his legacy. Additionally, Joseph is remembered fondly by brothers-in-law John DeBenedetto and his fiancée Erica, and Tom DeBenedetto, along with his nephew John-John DeBenedetto.
Joseph Michael Goenner’s life was one of heartfelt dedication—to family, work, and community. He was the epitome of a loving patriarch, possessing a generous spirit and an unyielding commitment to those he cherished. His memory will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew him, leaving a lasting impact that honors a life well-lived.
Joseph was preceded in death by his dear parents, Millie and Alfred "Pop" Goenner.
As we remember Joseph, we celebrate a gentleman whose kindness, humor, and unwavering love enriched the lives of many. His presence will be deeply missed, yet his legacy remains a beacon of warmth and integrity for generations to come.
