Obituary

Joseph Eugene Gibbs, 79, of Sun City Center, Florida, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2025. Born in Sumner County, Tennessee, on March 28, 1946, Eugene was the son of the late O.S. and Hester (Jones) Gibbs.

Eugene shared a lifelong love with his high school sweetheart, Elizabeth "Betty" Winslow. They were married on December 3, 1966, and celebrated 54 wonderful years together before her death in 2020.

A man of quiet strength, humor, and generosity, Eugene was known for his resilience and deep commitment to those around him. He served nine years in the Indiana National Guard, carrying the values of service and integrity into every chapter of his life. Early in his career, he worked as the plant manager at IMC Fertilizer in Forest, Indiana. Eugene and Betty were beloved members of their local community as owners of the Kempton, Indiana grocery store—where Eugene was known for his expertly cut meats and his warm, neighborly service.

In 1983, the Gibbs family relocated to Brandon, Florida, where Eugene and Betty continued to live, work, and serve others for more than four decades.

Eugene's greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his children, Christopher Gibbs and Julie Watson, both of Sun City Center; his grandchildren Kyleigh Eubanks, Matayah McKay, Marcus Watson, Isaiah Watson, and Cristin Marshall (Tyler) and great-grandchildren Grady and Graylin Marshall, who brought boundless happiness to his life. He is also survived by his siblings: David (Jean Ann) Gibbs, Jerry (Beverly) Gibbs, Donnie Gibbs, and Fran Dorsam.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty; his parents; his brother, Fred Gibbs; and his sisters, Alice Molden and Cathy Gibbs.

To those who knew him, Eugene was a source of steady love and support. His devotion to his family and friends and his generous heart will be remembered always. The family will honor Eugene's life with a private memorial service in Indiana at a later date.

He will be deeply missed—and forever cherished—by all who knew and loved him.
