John "Iron Man" Zitch, 88 years old passed away on March 17, 2023.
John was born in Tampa, Florida, and was the only child. At the age of 4, John was afflicted with Polio and had to use crutches and braces. However, John did not let Polio define his life. He attended public schools in Hillsborough County where he graduated high school. At the age of 20, he admired the upper strength of the heavy lifters who could bench press over 400 pounds! After watching a local contest, John was inspired
and worked out at local gyms. He continued his journey to compete and won "best arms" at two Mr. Florida contest.
John married Jewel and started his family, but also had an "extended family" with all the in-laws...some who were already childhood friends. He enjoyed the family gatherings and especially loved Aunt Faye's annual Family Christmas Party, where John was sure to leave with plenty of leftovers. There were many stories told and laughter shared.
John was a hard worker and was employed at GTE where he retired after 40 years. He later moved to the Canopy @ Walden Woods where he befriended many of the staff and residents. His friend Lisa blessed us with adopting his beloved cat, Licorice.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Jewel Zitch, and survived by his children, Randall Zitch and Pamela McNeil; and a host of grandchildren, one great-grandchild, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
