Obituary

On June 21, 2021, our free-spirit, Joan Denise Thorne, age 56, left this world for a better one in Heaven. She valiantly fought cancer until the end, with hardly a complaint.

Joan was born November 17, 1964 in Jacksonville, Florida, to Carolyn Petzinger and Judson A. Thorne, Jr. She has 2 sisters: Lisa & Tammy Thorne, both from Jacksonville, and a brother, Judson A. Thorne III, from Indiana. On September 10, 1971, Jud married Peg Sopko, who would become Joan's loving mother until her death. She also gained another sister, Laurie Allen (Darby) from Valrico, FL. and a brother, Bradley Sopko (Christy) from Elmhurst, IL. Many people fondly referred to us as "The Brady Bunch".

Joan loved life and anyone who met her could not forget her--from her amazing sense of style to her vivacious personality. She was always "the life of the party"! She could talk to anyone and make them feel welcome. She was a great pool player and loved the game! She enjoyed watching movies and her memory of them was unreal. She also loved to cook. She could make an amazing meal out of a few scattered leftovers. Most of all, Joan loved her family and wide circle of friends, and they in return. She also has many nieces and nephews: Margret Thompson (Duane), Chelsea Davis – both from Jacksonville; Judson Thorne IV, (Amanda), Cape Coral, FL; Jason Thorne (Monica), Ketchikan, AK; Grace Sopko, Memphis, TN; John Sopko, Kalamazoo, MI; Ryan, Samantha & Thomas Allen, Valrico, FL; Taylor Hogan (Hunter), Atlanta, GA; and several Great Nieces and Nephews—all who will miss their "Crazy Aunt Joan"!

We will miss Joan's quick smile, her straight talk, her positive outlook, her variety of outfits and hair styles, but most of all, her zest for life. We know she is with our Lord and we will see her again one day.
