Obituary

Maguire, Jean M., 87, of Brandon, passed away on November 13, 2016. Born on May 3, 1929, Jean grow up in Haverhill, MA, and graduated from Bridgewater State Teachers College in 1950, later earning her Master's Degree in Elementary Education from Boston University. Beginning her teaching career at a U.S. military base school in Okinawa, Japan sparked a life-long interest in Asian culture.

After returning stateside, she devoted her talents to educating the youth of Haverhill, MA and mentoring newer teachers, working mostly with first-grade students until she retired in December of 1984. She was a member of the National Education Association and the Massachusetts Teachers Association. Retirement brought her to Gulfport, FL where she was able to devote more time to her many hobbies. In addition to playing Scrabble, reading, creating needlepoint and crochet projects, enjoying classic movies, and taking walks along the shore, Jean always had one or two pet cats to love.

Jean eventually moved to Brandon, FL to be near her dear friends and adopted family, Jan Goldonowicz, Jessica (Eric) DeSalvo, and Joanna Goldonowicz. In addition to her parents, J. Walter Maguire and Mildred (Nason) Maguire, she is preceded in death by her brothers, Daniel Maguire and Paul (Rita) Maguire, and Jan's husband Mike. A Memorial Mass to celebrate Jean's life will be held on Monday, November 28 at 11:30 AM at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Valrico, FL. Burial will follow at a later date in Haverhill, MA.
