Obituary

Jane Marie Good Ames, 88, of Brandon, Florida, formerly of Northport, Maine died at home with her family on Monday, December 28, 2015. She was born April 24, 1927 in Altoona, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Frederick Alvin Good and Madeline Clark Good. Jane attended Altoona High School where she was a member of the Quill and Scroll Newswriting Club and served as Literary Editor for the Mountain Echo student newspaper. She later attended the College of William and Mary to study journalism. In 1945, Jane moved to Washington, DC to help with the war effort. She went to work in the Office of the Assistant Chief of Staff for Personnel at Army Air Forces Headquarters in the Pentagon. While there, she met her future husband, Col. Richard A. Ames, and on June 13, 1948 they were married at the Bolling Field Chapel in Washington, DC. She was a member of the Waldo County General Hospital Aid, the Belfast Garden Club, and the St. Francis of Assisi Church in Belfast, Maine. She contributed to numerous fund-raising efforts and shared her enthusiasm for sewing, decorating, crafts, and gardening by creating thousands of handmade gifts for hospital residents. In recognition of her efforts, she was a 1994 recipient of the Jefferson Award for Public Service. She is survived by two brothers, five children, and ten grandchildren: brothers Fred J. (Lois) Good of Gordonsville, VA and Robert A. (Phyllis) Good of Sinking Valley, PA; son Richard Ames, Jr. of Santa Ana, CA; daughter Marilyn (Sean) Hardies of Amsterdam, NY; daughter Dawn (Neal) De Vos, of Aptos, CA; son Jeffrey (Julie) Ames of Temple Terrace, FL; son Randal (Mary) Ames of Elizabethtown, KY; and grandchildren: Anna Hardies of Jersey City, NJ; Lauren (Brett) Rudowsky of Chicago, IL; Sean Hardies of Dover, NH; John Hardies of College Park, MD; Katherine (Jaymes) Norris, Sarah and Colleen Ames of Elizabethtown, KY; and Maria, Christina, and Anna Ames of Temple Terrace, FL. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 2, 2016 at the Serenity Meadows Funeral Home, 6919 Providence Road, Riverview, FL. The Memorial Service will begin at 1:30 pm, with visitation at 12:30 pm. Floral arrangements, in celebration of her love of gardening and flowers, will be welcome. Final interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. There, she will join her husband, on a knoll adjacent to the United States Air Force Memorial and within sight of The Pentagon, where they first met nearly 70 years ago.
