IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James
Dunn
June 12, 1934 – February 22, 2026
June 12,1934-February 22,2026
James Dunn, age 91, passed away peacefully on February 22, 2026, with Dorothy, his loving wife for 69 years by his side. The youngest child of 5, James was born on June 12, 1934, in Cleveland, Ohio to Edward and Hazel Dunn. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Jack and Edward, and sisters Betty and Marjorie.
Dad is a Veteran of the United States Navy and upon his discharge, he went on to spend his college years at Ohio State University. In 1956, he met Dorothy Grega in Cleveland, Ohio who would become his wife on May 18, 1957.
Dad spent his entire career in the Insurance Industry working for The Continental Insurance Companies now known as CNA. Through continuous hard work he rose through the ranks of the company finishing his career in 1991 as Vice President Claims and Operations and opting for early retirement and a move to Florida to enjoy some relaxing time with mom.
Dad always enjoyed a round of golf with his golfing buddies from River Hills. He didn't care about his score; it was more about enjoying time with the people that were important to him.
Anyone can be a father but not everyone can be a "Dad." Nobody has had a better dad than us. Our dad was always there for each of us. He was there to hold our trick or treat candy bags when our arms got tired, and to help deliver newspapers early Sunday mornings for our paper route. If he wasn't coaching our baseball team he would be at our games cheering for us. Family time was especially important to dad. No matter what, nothing would prevent him from taking us on our yearly summer family vacation; it didn't matter where, as long as we were together.
Dad loved being a grandpa. He was always so proud and beamed with joy whenever he held a new arrival in his arms which he had the pleasure of doing 14 times.
The last time I visited dad, I was saying goodbye to him at bedtime and telling him I was leaving the next day to go home. He looked at me and said with all sincerity "I'll miss you." Dad, we are all missing you.
Dad is survived by his wife Dorothy of 69 years, and their 5 children Bob Dunn (Lisa), Karen Reddington (Jim), Cheryl Placke (Casey), Lori Topka (Bobby), David Dunn (Traci), his 12 grandchildren Ashley Dunn, Courtney Dunn, Erin Reddington, Katie McKeon (Tripp), Corey Reddington (Olivia), David Placke (Curie), Brandon Placke (Megan), Meghan Passchier (Dennis), Andrew Topka (Tais), Kailee Topka (Matt), Hayley Dunn, Alexis Dunn, and his 2 great grandchildren Wesley Passchier and Cooper McKeon.
The viewing will be on March 3rd from 10:00am-10:45am at Nativity Catholic Church 705 East Brandon Blvd followed by mass at 11:00am.
Dad will be laid to rest at 1:30pm at Sarasota National Cemetery 9810 State Road 72 Sarasota Florida.
