James Garland Cates, 72, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2025, surrounded by family at his daughter's home in Riverview, FL.

James was a dedicated father, grandfather, and friend who valued both hard work and time with family. He spent nearly a decade as a Project Manager for Universal Studios, where he took great pride in his contributions, particularly in helping bring Volcano Bay waterpark to life.

Beyond his career, James enjoyed the simple things—spending time at the beach, sharing oyster lunches with his daughter by the water, and watching his favorite football team, the Miami Dolphins. He loved country music and cooking. One of his greatest joys was watching his daughter compete in swimming, spending many years cheering her on at meets. His goldendoodle, Summer, was his loyal companion.

James was preceded in death by his parents, James and Patricia Cates; his brother, John Cates; and his daughter, Jennifer Rivera. He is survived by his daughter, Julie Poti; her husband, Quinn Poti; and his granddaughter, Lily Poti.

James' legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered.
