Obituary

Cain, James R. (Jim) 64, of Brandon, passed away on December 10, 2010. Jim was born in Stuttgart, Arkansas. He graduated from Misawa High School, in Misawa, Japan. He was an Air Force veteran and served in the Vietnam War. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of West Florida in 1975. Jim relocated to Tampa in 1999 when he went to work for Hillsborough County Public Schools. His title (research analyst) and job description did not come close to capturing all that he did for the school district. Jim was so well-known and highly regarded, he was affectionately referred to as "The Mayor" of the Sam Horton Instructional Services Center (ISC) where his office was located. Though his work computer and files were at the ISC, Jim's workplace was the entire school district. He took superb photographs in classrooms, helped broadcast School Board meetings, designed the district's telephone directory cover year after year, and provided graphics for multi-million dollar grant proposals. Jim was the person responsible for all the photographs and cover for the official history book of the school district - a true labor of love and a document of inestimable historic value. In his spare time, Jim pursued his love of photography and he and his fiance, Carol Olive, recently established a professional photography business specializing in wedding photography. Jim's sudden death has been attributed to an apparent heart attack. He experienced heart problems in the past, but that didn't prevent him from being one of the hardest working people in the school district. Jim was multi-talented and technologically savvy, and always worked on several projects at once. His ability with a camera always brought out the best in his subjects. Jim will be sadly missed by Carol's daughter, Tina, and many wonderful friends. Jim's fiance, Carol Olive, has asked that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Wounded Warrior Project or American Heart Association. A visitation will be held at First United Methodist Church of Brandon at 121 N. Knights Ave. on Saturday, December 18, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. A celebration of Jim's life will take place at noon followed by a reception.
