Huntley Edward Jackson Lawrence was born on May 4, 1937 in St. Thomas Parrish, Jamaica West Indies to Eugenie Beryl and Claudius Sydney Lawrence. He spent eighteen years in Jamaica before migrating to England. While he was in England, he worked for the London Department of Transportation as a double decker bus driver and bus maintainer. He began to train as a welder and successfully completed course work at City and Guilds School and later found work in that field. He met his future wife, Gwendolyn in London in 1960 while she was training to be a registered nurse. The two had a lot in common and after a brief engagement, were soon married. The family migrated to the United States in 1969. After settling in Queens, NY he began working for Etco Wire and cable. He loved the outdoors and would often go with family and friends to outings in the park, fishing off the boats in Sheepshead Bay, and spend hours toiling in his beloved garden where he grew a variety of vegetables and flowers. Later on, he worked for Proctor and Gamble in 1974 as a Pipe Fitter and Welder and moved to a different area of Queens where he had a big garage in which to indulge his curiosity of fixing, building, hammering, shaping anything imaginable. There was not anything he would not try to make better. He also loved to help his fellow neighbors and often would lend a hand in helping them with repairs in return for a gracious hand shake and smile. Gwen was always supportive of his ideas and adventures, even if it meant more things to clean up. His infectious smile and offbeat humor always made her day. He retired in 1992 and moved down to Tampa, Florida where he joined a community of family and friends and continued to do what he loved; gardening, fixing things, helping others, and traveling. He was a gentle man who was cherished by friends, loved a nice cup of tea, and a good game of dominoes. The family would like to especially thank his best friend and big brother Joseph Panton who was always by his side, Lloyd and Evadne Ashley for their dedication and attention to detail, and Eurceline and Furgus Burrell for their continuous prayers while he battled complications, and for the amazing support of family and friends near and far. He is watching over his beloved wife, Gwendolyn, four children including Annette, Sandra and (her husband Mbaye Diao), Huntley and (his wife Audrey), Sonya, and seven grandchildren; Kayla, Christopher, Maiya, Serigne, Seydou, Daniel and Elijah. He also leaves behind four brothers, which Joseph, David, Claude and Mark, two sisters, Florence and Dawn, and several nieces and nephews, and many close friends that were like family. There will be a funeral service on Saturday, September 20, 2014 at 3:30 pm at High Point Church on Lithia Pinecrest, with a visitation one hour prior.
