Obituary

Helvey Marie Mantyla Bitting of Brandon Florida passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, 8/24/2019 at 7:30 am after a long, productive and happy life of 98 years. She was born on 3/20/1921 in Tripoli, Wisconsin to the large family of Anton and Emilia Mantyla. During her life she was a sister, student, girlfriend, traveler, wife, mother and grandmother. All her life she was an excellent caregiver and she enjoyed taking care of her family and friends. When she was a young girl growing up on a farm during the depression in Wisconsin she took care of her younger brothers and sisters and did her chores, cooking, cleaning and farm work. She graduated as valedictorian of her class and was offered a scholarship to teachers college but decided to travel to Chicago and begin her life adventures.  She landed a job at Marshall Fields as a secretary and saved her money to travel around the western states with her sisters. She enjoyed music and would go dance and listen to the big bands at the Aragon Ballroom. She met a handsome marine at the Aragon named Park Bitting and they got married and settled down. They had three sons named Scott, Michael and Steven and they were raised with much love, kindness, good food, music and laughter. Helvey was a devoted homemaker and gave much support to her husband and sons and as the years passed Park started his own business and the sons graduated college, started careers, got married and had children. Helvey welcomed all the wives lovingly into the family and her greatest joy was to help take care of the grandchildren. There was always a place at the table for her son friends and much laughter and overeating took place during the holiday feasts. Vacations to the cabin in Wisconsin and out west were always made special by Helvey with music, fine food and interesting things to do. Helvey and Park brought the boys to Y Guides, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and sports and even though they were busy making a living and keeping a home they always took time out for family and friends. Helvey remained a devoted caregiver throughout her life and loved to babysit her grandchildren, help sick relatives and finally care for her husband Park so he could stay in their home when he became ill. She did her very best to stay in her home into her late 90's and finally went to assisted living. She always remained curious about what all her family and grandchildren were doing and loved the visits and going out to dinner to catch up on everyone's latest adventures and triumphs. She loved nature and couldn't wait to get ready every day and go outside into the sunshine to hear the birds sing. God bless you Helvey for your kindness and for making so many people's journeys a little easier.
