IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gorantla
Govindaiah
November 8, 1942 – February 21, 2025
Our beloved, Gorantla Govindaiah, passed away peacefully in his home in Wimauma, Florida, surrounded by his family, on February 21, 2025, at the age of 82.
Gorantla was born in Hindupur, Andhra Pradesh, India on November 8, 1942 and was the middle child of eleven children. The joys and challenges of growing up in India instilled a lifelong sense of compassion and generosity in Gorantla. He often regaled stories of racing his brothers up mango trees or running around piles of nuts at his father's peanut oil factory, while also speaking of the pressures he felt to succeed and the motivations that resulted. He was the first in his family to attain higher education and completed medical school at Guntur Medical College. He was an excellent student and graduated first in his class while also receiving many honors, including gold medals for medicine and surgery.
Opportunity in the United States soon beckoned, and Gorantla completed his general surgical training at Lakewood Hospital (now part of the Cleveland Clinic) in Cleveland, Ohio and as a Chief Resident at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. He married the love of his life, his wife Sujatha of fifty-two years, on March 7, 1973. During much of his 45 years practicing medicine in Moline, Illinois, he and Sujatha worked in the same office where he delighted in eating lunch together every day at work. After they both retired from medicine, they moved to Florida in 2018 where Gorantla spent his free time sitting on the lanai and watching movies with his wife.
A dedicated family man with a giant heart, he loved playing with his children, and then grandchildren—building sand castles at the beach, reading them stories, and entertaining them with cards and board games. Most of all he enriched his family, sharing life lessons and speaking humbly about his motivations and endeavors to assist countless others who were less fortunate. Even in his final days, he expressed worry about who would take care of his children, his grandchildren, and especially his partner in life, Sujatha.
He often reminded his children of the financial support he received from the Arya Vysya Charitable and Education Foundation, which awarded him a scholarship for his medical schooling and without which he would have been unable to become a physician. Within a few years of completing medical school, and without any expectation of doing so, he repaid the Foundation in full, and continued supporting it into his late years. As a direct result of the Foundation's generosity, Gorantla embraced a duty of following the same principle to support others, and that duty was often a factor in major decisions he made throughout his life.
He spent his lifetime striving to ensure his parents, siblings, and extended family were able to achieve their aspirations and find success by supporting education, weddings, and advancement for his entire family. He was active in his local community, participating in civic organizations such as the Rotary Club, and was a driving force behind the founding and opening of the Quad City Hindu Temple, where he served as a founding member of the Board of Directors.
He spent his lifetime traveling the world, collecting hats from each country he visited, and savoring his favorite foods including mangos, chips and salsa, nuts, homemade yogurt, idli, dosa, sambar, rasam, banana splits, holege, pakodi, nipputu, laddu, and intensely hot coffee.
Gorantla is survived by his wife, Sujatha, his sons, Rajesh (spouse Renu) and Manoj (spouse Sirisha), and four grandchildren, Sarina, Aleena, Arya, and Sanjana.
