Erving Hewitt, 81, of Riverview, Florida, passed away, Monday, January 9, 2017 surrounded by family. Erving Alexander Hewitt born to Ida Charlton and Egbert Shaw in Marlton district in the parish of Manchester in Jamaica on March 19, 1935. Erving was raised in Pike district by his paternal grandmother Emily Adamson-Hewitt. A loving woman, Mama had a profound influence on Erving and he called her "Mama." Even from a very early age, Erving was a bright, jovial boy. He attended the prestigious Holmwood Technical High School and later was one of the first students to be accepted to the College of Arts, Science and Technology (CAST) (now called The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech)). He won a scholarship to advance his studies in England, but was not able to accept the opportunity because of his financial situation. He excelled in track and field, science, agricultural, and woodwork. Once he immigrated to the United States, Erving was a pioneer in the technology field as he worked for several decades in the computer industry at the dawn of the computer age. And over the years he started several businesses. And once he moved to Florida became active in the Presbyterian Church of Bloomingdale. Erving had a passion for technology, learning new things, music, the New York Knicks basketball team, Cricket, and spending time with his family. He is known for his kindness, generosity, and infectious personality. He is survived by his daughters Angella Hewitt, Marcia Hewitt, Michelle Cohn, and Nicole Cabral; 2 granddaughters Summer Hewitt-Alphonso and Abiose Oguntola; 4 sisters Mervis Henry, Tycie Causwell, Beverly Powell and Lissett Heron, 7 great grandchildren Alanna, Ashley, Rashawn, Peter III, Milan, Lulu, and Dada; sons-in-law Nilton Cabral and Anthony Cohn; grandsons-in-law Peter Alphonso Jr. II and Baba Oguntola and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.There will be a visitation for Erving on Friday, January 20, 2017 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Serenity Meadows Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at 12:00 pm at Presbyterian Church of Bloomingdale. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at stjude.org.
