She slipped away in the loving arms of her Savior. Ellen Grant departed this life on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 in Sun City Center, Florida.
Ellen Johnson Grant was born on November 13, 1934, the eighth child of Martin and Beatrice Johnson of Washington, DC. A quiet and thoughtful child, Ellen was part of a joyful, active group of siblings. She received her elementary education at the Washington Union Academy (now the DuPont Park Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) school) and later attended Randall Jr. High School, where her mother was once enrolled. She would later complete her General Education Development (GED) studies.
Ellen met and married Edward Grant and to this union were born two sons, Michael and Ronald. Her children were the source of her greatest joy. A devoted and loving mother, she was a constant presence, providing guidance and encouragement as they grew into adulthood and began their careers and families. She delighted in their accomplishments and achievements. Ellen was baptized into the Remnant Church in 1979 at the conclusion of the Breath of Life crusade conducted by Elder Charles D. Brooks along with her sister Doris. She became a member of the Capitol Hill SDA Church where she attended faithfully along with her dear friend, the late Ora Morrow. She especially enjoyed attending Sabbath School, Divine Worship services and the choir and singing of Pastor Wintley Phipps. A hard worker, she took great pride in doing a stellar job and completing each task with utmost care, Ellen was employed by the General Services Administration (GSA). Retiring after 32 years of federal service, she would later relocate in 1998 to Sun City Center, Florida to reside closer to her son Ronald and family.
Family was of utmost importance to Ellen. Gifted with culinary and baking skills, Ellen was famous for her baked goods—sweet potato pie, coconut cake, cookies with and without nuts and raisins, and rice puddings!! Along with her sisters, she would spend hours preparing for the
family reunions, cooking all night long to the delight of the nephews, nieces, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends. A talented homemaker, Ellen had a flair for home decorations, such that her apartment was often used as the model in the complex.
Predeceased by her parents, siblings Beulah, Marion, Evelyn, Arthur, Milton, Harvey, Marie, Doris, and Barbara, she leaves to mourn her passing, loving and devoted sons, Michael and Ronald (Debra) and grandchildren, Devon, Sylvia, and Julian and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and a large host of neighbors, church family and friends.
A Mother …is a Blessing
A mother is a blessing, she is thoughtfulness and love.
The finest and most precious gift, sent from our Father above.
You know she'll always be there; whether skies be blue or gray.
She'll always lend a helping hand, she'll never turn away.
Each selfless thing about her is special to recall,
A Mother is Blessing, the most precious one of all.

Mothers Never Really Die
Death beckoned her with outstretched hand
and whispered softly of an unknown land,
But she was not afraid to go, for though the path she did not know.
She took death's hand without fear, for He who safely brought her here, had told her He would
lead the way, into eternity's bright day. And so she did not go alone, into the valley that's unknown.
She gently took death by the hand and journeyed to the promised land.
And there, with step so light and gay
she polished the sun by day and lights the stars
that shine at night and keeps the moonbeams silvery bright.
For Mothers never really die, they just keep house up in the sky.
And in the heavenly home above, they wait to welcome those they love.
