Mr. Braunstein had a long and valued life.  He witnessed many things in his 102 years and he was very proud of his service to his country.  He was motivated to join the armed forces after the attack on Pearl Harbor that occurred shortly after his 22 nd birthday.  He joined the Army and was quickly sent to advanced training in Fort Still, Oklahoma where he was selected for Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in June 1942.  It was during leave from Officer Candidate School that he met his wife Freda, and by the end of 1943 (eight months after they met) they were married. He was then deployed to fight in World War II including the "Battle of the Bulge" When he returned home to New York, where his wife and family were waiting for him. For a time, everything was normal. At that time, he and Freda had a son.  Then in 1951 he was deployed to Korea as a Captain and led an artillery battery of the 158 th Field Artillery Battalion. Upon leaving Korea he received orders to report to Fort Bragg, North Carolina where he was asked to become a Russian Linguist so Mr. Braunstein packed his family and moved to California.  He was then transferred to Germany and he saw the construction of the Berlin Wall.  In 1964 Elihu returned to the United States to work at the Pentagon and then back to Heidelberg, Germany in 1973 until 1977 and then retired for good in 1986. He was recognized with the Legion of Merit, a prestigious award for exceptional military service.
