Donald Henry Smith 82 years old of Riverview, Florida passed away on July 19th, 2022, at South Bay Hospital, surrounded by loving family. Don Smith was born and raised in Keysville, Florida and graduated from Pinecrest High School in 1957. Don Smith was preceded in death by his parents, James Olin Smith Sr. and Clealia Emmaline Smith and brothers James (J.O.) Smith and Gerald "Busser" Smith. Don Smith is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Arlene G. Smith, sons Donald Grant, (wife Kelly), Tyler Smith (wife Michele), brother Robert Smith and grandchildren: Mason Smith, (wife Elizabeth), Merritt Verspohl, (husband Noah), Mallory Smith, Joshua Smith, and Abigail Smith.
Don Smith was a sawmiller his entire life, starting in his youth, he began working with his father and brother. When Don was 17 years old, he was employed by Agricultural Chemical Company, located in Pierce, Florida. Don Smith served his country in the Army National Guard from 1963 until 1968. In the 1970s and 80s, Don Smith returned to saw milling in Honduras and Belize in Central America. Don Smith and his brother cleared land and developed the Cockscomb Basin in Belize, which employed hundreds of workers, provided for families, and built roads that to this day are still in use servicing the largest Jaguar preserve in the world. Don Smith enjoyed wood working, gardening, constructing solar powered arrays and annoying his granddaughters with his corny jokes. Don Smith was loved by many and impacted all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Don's memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 6th, 2022, 10AM at Serenity Meadows located at 6919 Providence Road, Riverview, Florida. Visitation will be from 10 to 10:30 AM, followed by the service. In lieu of flowers the memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association, or the American Cancer Association.
