Delores Pownell

November 26, 1921 August 18, 2011

After an adventurous and daring life, Delores Rosalie Pownell died peacefully on Thursday, August 18 at Belvedere Commons in Tampa. Delores was born November 26, 1921 and grew up at her parents' house on Highland Avenue in Tampa. Her parents were Joseph and Adalaid Pownell and her sisters were Viola, Francis, Elaine, and Sunshine.

During World War II Delores drove and repaired vehicles in the motor pool at Drew Field in Tampa, an experience that opened her eyes to the world beyond and to her own strengths and abilities. After the war she worked as a hospital orderly, in traveling sales, and other odd jobs, before finding her calling in floral arrangement. She did floral piecework before starting her own floral shop, Flowers by Pownell, in 1957. She later opened two additional shops, Ruskin Flower and Gift, and Temple Terrace Flower and Gift, which she ran until her retirement.

She planned hundreds of weddings over her career, attending to every detail, and is remembered as an imaginative floral arranger, an indefatigable worker, and an astute businesswoman.

Delores married Vivian Cooper in 1937 and they had two children, Vivian and Dell. She later married Albert A. Mitchell in 1948. Following their divorce a few years later, she remained proudly and determinedly single for the remainder of her life.

She loved world travel, and made numerous trips with her lifelong friends Victor and Mildred Yeats, Emilio Pons, and John and Anna Echols. A steadfast friend, in her retirement she provided in-home care for several of them to their final days. She is remembered for her sociability, her fairness, and her compassion for those in need.

Delores is survived by her sister Elaine, two children, six grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. A memorial service is scheduled for 1 pm Saturday, August 27, at Serenity Meadows Funeral Home at 6919 Providence Road, Riverview. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to LifePath Hospice.
