David Edward Silver, 76, passed away at home on April 10, 2026, following a long and difficult period of hospitalization and rehabilitation.
Born June 3, 1949, in Glendale, California, to Ellis Edward and Sarah Nell Cordell Silver, David grew up to be a man of curiosity, intelligence, and kindness. He graduated from T.C. Roberson High School in Asheville, North Carolina, and attended Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, where he met the love of his life, Ann Foristel.
After moving to Tampa, Florida, David earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sociology from the University of South Florida. In 1974, he and Ann relocated to Washington, D.C., where he worked for the Census Bureau. A lifelong science fiction enthusiast and self-taught programmer, David built his first computer from scratch—an early sign of his pioneering spirit.
In 1982, David and Ann moved to Bradenton, Florida, where they opened one of the nation’s earliest retail computer stores, The Computer Chip. The following year, they welcomed their son, Jeffrey David Silver. Fatherhood was one of David’s greatest joys, and he treasured watching Jeff grow.
A true innovator in the early days of personal computing, David developed custom software and mentored many young employees, helping launch careers in technology, engineering, and beyond. His work had lasting impact—some of his software remains in use decades later. He and Ann sold their business in 1999.
In 2001, they purchased a summer home in Highlands, North Carolina, and in 2012 made it their permanent residence—a place they deeply loved. David found joy in building, creating, and nurturing things, whether through his work or in his garden.
David will be remembered as a kind, patient, and thoughtful man who genuinely cared for others. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a mentor to many. His gentle nature, wisdom, and willingness to help others succeed left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
In his final days, he was surrounded by extraordinary love and care from family and friends. The family extends special gratitude to Jay, Lisa, Zach, Allie, Kat, and Dean for their devotion during this time.
David is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ann; his son, Jeffrey; his brother, Richard Silver (Barbara); his sister, Nelda Trabow (Jon); and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He will be deeply missed, and his absence leaves the world a lesser place.
A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at 2:00pm on May 15, at Serenity Meadows in Brandon, Florida.
