Obituary

DeRuzzo, David, 76, of Brandon passed away on October 3, 2012. He was born on March 24, 1936 in Concord, Massachusetts to the late Antonio and Michelina (Maglioni) DiRuzza. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Sheila (Dougherty) DeRuzzo. After graduating from high school, David entered the University of Florida on a football scholarship. He received all his degrees at the university, including his Doctorate in Education. His teaching career spanned 43 years and included being a teacher, coach, and school administrator. His career advanced into the role of superintendent in four different school districts; Louisville, Kentucky, Jefferson Parrish, Louisiana, Starkville, Mississippi, and St. Lucie County, Florida. In 1992, to be closer to his family, he returned to the classroom at Booker T. Washington Middle School in Ybor City, finishing his career as assistant principal in 2001. During his retirement, David worked as a substitute teacher in Hillsborough County for over a decade. Along with his love for his family, David loved the GATORS. He was a member of the UF Alumni Association, Boosters Club of UF, and the "F"club. He enjoyed the Gator Football and Basketball programs and supported them as a season ticket holder. David leaves behind, to cherish his memory, his wife; two sons Mark (Sherry) DeRuzzo, of Indian Shores, Fl., and Brian DeRuzzo of Zephyrhills, Fl., a daughter Debbie (Michael) Healy of Palmetto, Fl., a brother John (Jean) DiRuzzo of Concord, Massachusetts, grandchildren; Michael DeRuzzo, Kevin Healy, Ashlynn DeRuzzo, Stephanie DeRuzzo, and Patrick Healy, and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by a son Darrel DeRuzzo, a brother Ben DeRuzzo, and three sisters Mary Allen, Alvera Ostiguy, and Anne Butler. A Funeral Mass will take place on Tuesday October 9, 2012 at 10am at Nativity Catholic Church in Brandon, Fl. Those attending are asked to go directly to the church. A viewing will be on Monday October 8, 2012 from 6-8pm at Serenity Meadows Funeral Home Riverview, Fl. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be sent to St. Jude's Children Research Hospital 501 St. Jude Place Memphis TN 38105.
