Daniel F
Harshbarger
November 3, 1946 — March 11, 2021
Daniel F. Harshbarger, 74, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2021 after suffering injuries in a fall.
Dan was born in West Virginia and spent his youth in Cape May, New Jersey. After graduating from Lower Cape May Regional High School and attending Villanova University for two years, Dan joined the navy where he served as a Corpsman for four years. His experience working with wounded service members in Vietnam, convinced him that he wanted a career in medicine.
After first finishing his degree at Monmouth College in New Jersey, he received his nursing certification and began working in the intensive care unit at Monmouth Medical Center, where he met and married his wife, Lynn Campbell. Dan then attended the prestigious Physician's Assistant program at Duke University, graduating in 1978.
Dan spent most of his career in the medical unit of the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant where he was valued by all for his empathy and professionalism. He often was able to diagnose problems that had been missed by other medical professionals and was credited with improving the lives and working conditions of many of his fellow employees.
Dan retired from Calvert Cliffs in 2008 and moved with Lynn to Apollo Beach, Florida in 2012. He was an active member of Saint Ann's Catholic Church where he volunteered in the food pantry.
A lifelong sports fan, Dan was an enthusiastic supporter of both the Duke and Villanova basketball programs and could be found on Sundays in the fall with Lynn rooting, often in vain, for the Washington Football Team. He shared his love of sports with his step-daughter, Karole, and they would have long conversations about the fortunes of their favorite franchises.
Dan was a calming presence in any situation. His caring and concern for family and friends alike was apparent to everyone but was never more on display then when he was with Lynn, his wife of 45 years, whom he loved above all others.
Dan was predeceased by his mother and father, Patricia and Dan Harshbarger, his brother Walt Johnston and his stepson, Mark Langlois. He is survived by his wife, Lynn, his stepdaughter, Karole Langlois, his neice, Teri Koehnlein and his nephews Paul, David and Matthew Johnston.
In Lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Lung Association.
