SSG. Charles Verdine Shuman (Hook), 91, passed away April 30, 2022, at Melech Hospice House in Temple Terrace, FL. He was born Jan. 6, 1931, in Winter Haven, FL. He graduated from Winter Haven High School in 1950. Moved to Tampa in 1959, where he worked for American Can Company until 1979 when the plant closed and moved to Texas. He did not want to move to Texas, so he took early retirement. Charles did not like retirement life, so he went to work for Purolator Freight delivering packages and payrolls until 1990, when health issues forced him into retirement. Charles stayed busy helping people throughout his retirement, especially with their cars as he loved doing mechanics. He loved to fish and play golf with his old cronies. An avid lover of his dogs and grandchildren, it was difficult to find Charles without one or the other.

Charles is a National Guard retiree with 21+ years' service.

A memorial service will be held May 13, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at the Reflection Garden Monument at Serenity Meadows in Riverview, FL. In lieu of flowers, Charles's family asks that you make memorial donations to the Wounded Warrior Project at 855-448-3997.

Charles is preceded in death by his parents, Zara and Mamie Shuman, three brothers, Victor, Kermit, and Alton, and a half-sister, Lila Mae. Survived by his wife, Joanne, three daughters, Denise, Darlene, and Melody plus their spouses, three stepdaughters, Debbie, Trisha, and Lisa, and two stepsons, David and Mitchell plus their spouses, 13 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren, plus numerous nieces and nephews.
