Charles Edward
"Bucky" Hoffman
June 10, 1936 — June 8, 2020
On June 8, 2020, Master Sergeant Charles Edward Hoffman ("Bucky") passed peacefully away at the age of 83, at home, surrounded by his family in Tampa, Florida.
Charles was born in Baltimore, Maryland, the youngest of three sons to the late Thomas and Geraldine Hoffman, on June 10, 1936. He was predeceased by his brothers: Pvt. William Hoffman and Eugene Hoffman. He enlisted in the USAF at age 18. On December 8, 1958 he married Margaret Theresa O'Toole. They were blessed with 4 children: Christopher (Joanne), William (Rhonda), Marguerite (Allan) and Janinne (Matthew). After 22 years, he retired from the USAF. He then attended the University of South Florida and graduated with a degree in Computer Engineering. He worked for GTE Data Services until he retired again.
Charles and Margaret were married for 36 years. They lived in New York, England, Nebraska and finally settled in Florida. He was a devoted and loving husband during her long illness.
He was a 50+ year member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. He was a lifelong runner, opera lover, military sharpshooter, and a champion handball player, playing until well into his 70s. He had an epic sweet tooth, with eclairs a particular favorite.
Charles hit his greatest stride as a grandfather of 10 grandchildren: LeAnna, Shannon, Michael, Sean, Ayden, Logan, Matthew, Hannah, William and James. He was spoiling and indulgent, patient and caring. Charles loved giving his grandchildren the gift they most desired at Christmas and taking them to 4pm Red Lobster dinners. He was always ready to offer wisdom and advice about their lives and encouraged their academic pursuits and hobbies.
He leaves behind his godson and nephew Eugene Hoffman of Baltimore Maryland, his goddaughter and niece Karen Mardon of St. Albans, England, brother in laws Frank Sharpe, Festy O'Toole and Tommy O'Toole, sister in laws Ann Lambe, Bridie O'Toole, Eileen O'Toole, and Breda O'Toole as well as many loved O'Toole nieces and nephews.
Dad/Gramps/PopPop, lived a quiet, simple life of deep contentment and steadfast faith. Charles loved his family well. He was surely greeted by his Heavenly Father with "well done good and faithful servant" and reunited again with his wife.
The family would like to thank the many caregivers who helped care for him, especially Gail Morgan and Alexis French who cared for him like family for many years.
