Carlos C. Soriano, M.D., 80, of Riverview, FL, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 10, 2019 at the LifePath Hospice at Tampa General Hospital. Born in San Miguel, Bulacan, Philippines, the son of the late Jose and Ines (Carpio) Cruz, Carlos graduated from the University of Santo Tomas Medical School in 1964. Upon graduation, he married Sylvia Torres and immigrated to Saginaw, Michigan where he interned at St. Luke's Hospital. After completing a surgical residency at Jamaica Hospital in Queens, New York and a hand surgery fellowship at Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan, he moved to St. Petersburg, Florida where he established a private medical practice in 1973. Prior to retirement in 2004, Carlos was the Chief of Surgery and on the Board of Governors of Lake Seminole Hospital in Seminole, Florida and was a fellow of the American Board of Abdominal Surgery.
Carlos served in leadership roles in organizations such as the Filipino-American Club of Pinellas County, founded in 1975 and The Philippine Medical Society of the West Coast Florida Chapter, founded in 1978. In addition, he co-founded the St. Petersburg International Folk Fair Society (SPIFFS) in 1976, The Philippine Cultural Foundation Inc., and the Bayanihan Arts Center in 1993. He was the recipient of a key to the City of St. Petersburg, FL in 1976. He is also the author of Son of a Dress Maker (Author House 2011).
Carlos is survived by his wife, Sylvia Soriano, his four children, Christine (Todd) Schweitzer of Atlanta, GA, Charles (Joe) Soriano of New York, NY, Chad (Kathleen) Soriano of Riverview, FL; Eight grandchildren, Olivia, Kevin Jr., Morgan, Alyssa, Zoe, Madeline, Rylan Jude and Serena; and his sister, Inicita Maslog of Jacksonville, FL. He was predeceased by his daughter Cheryl (Kevin) Nance and his sister, Luzviminda Cabuay.
