Bienvenida Ramos Carrasquillo was born on March 21, 1924 in Juan Martín, Puerto Rico to Jesus Carrasquillo and Asunción Jimenez. She was the second eldest sister out of eight siblings. At the age of sixteen, the little "jibarita" from "el campo" was wooed by the very handsome and sophisticated Valentín Ramos. They were married and had six children: Ana, Valentin, Isabel, Maria, Carmen, and Rita. They moved to the Bronx in 1961 and Valentin passed away in 1965. With four young daughters still at home, Bienvenida went to work "en la factoría" as a seamstress. She also made wedding and quinceañera dresses for the women in the neighborhood. Over the years she helped raise and care for many of her 19 grandchildren and some of her 39 great grandchildren. She also had six great great grandchildren. She was the matriarch and the glue of her family. She enjoyed crocheting, needlepoint, and other crafts. Our mami and abuela passed away in her home on July 3, 2023 in Riverview, Florida surrounded by most of her children and some of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will forever be missed.
