Alan E.
Devney
April 12, 1939 — January 2, 2022
Alan E Devney Sr, 82, of Valrico, FL passed away on January 2, 2022. Alan was born in Painesville, Ohio to Lee and Marion Devney. He had two beloved brothers, Lee N. Devney (Margaret) and Donald Devney (Sally). He graduated from Kentucky Military Institute and Kent State University where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta.
Al was a proud US Army veteran whose career spanned 26 years. He served two tours in Vietnam receiving the Purple Heart and numerous medals of valor. By the grace of God, he survived the first major battle of the Vietnam war, the IA Drang Valley of which the movie, We Were Soldiers was made and military textbooks were written. His tours also include serving as President Nixon's transportation officer, Commander, 10th Transportation Battalion and served in Germany, Hawaii, and throughout the USA.
Alan and his wife Mary were married 56 years and had 4 children; Alan Devney Jr. (Ashley), Ann (Andre) Marciano, Kathleen (Jason) Rogers and Tom (Ramsey) Devney. He has 11 grandchildren Kerry (Matt) Bowman, Noah Devney, Justin, Colette and Shaylah Marciano, Ella, Janey and Kara Rogers, Jake, Mary, and Sarah Devney, and 1 great grandchild, Russell Bowman. It was with great sadness that he lost his son Alan Jr a few years ago. They are now together with Jesus.
His great joy in life, in addition to his large and extended family gatherings and hunting trips was his beloved Buckhorn Springs Country Club, golfing 5 days a week. Not to mention, his breakfasts at Panera every morning with the "Brain Trust" including lovingly exaggerated story swapping and laughter. His life was truly full of wonderful friends and family.
He was one of the founding members of St Stephen Catholic Church when it opened at Beef O'Bradys and maintained his favorite seat every Sunday at 9:30 Mass.
Retired LTC Devney will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
